Dear family and friends,

It’s our last Sunday in Nkhoma already, so let us send one last note.  What a privilege for us to serve here for these months!  We’re happy we could share a bit of the experience with you.

Mostly I’m going to send a few more pictures, to give a flavor of our life here.  I caught Giny with Paula right after Wednesday morning chapel.  She is one of the Chaplains staff in the hospital, and a delightful person.  I...

Dear family & friends,

Greetings from Malawi. Thank you for your prayers. I am happy to report that the Ministry of Health and CHAM (Christian Health Association of Malawi) have come to an agreement of payments on Friday. There was a strike among the nursing staff on Thursday for non- essential services only, which lasted one day. We hope that this will help to make the labor relations more restful again. Rains continue, but not as frequently. We still take the...

Dear family & friends,

Happy Valentines Day!  This morning I enjoyed the little display in our one and only grocery shop here in Nkhoma: “You have brought an ending happiness to my life.”  I think it was from China, but these subtle mistakes in English pop up nearly every day.  We were also reminded how rich we are, shopping at this up-scale shop.  The crowded open-air market...

Dear family and friends

Many of you on our email list knew that we were set to leave again for Malawi, but now we realize that some of you did not.

The  Nkhoma Christian Hospital administration had asked us to come back.  They wanted Mark to continue with the transition to electronic bookkeeping in the hospital. Plus the physician working with the medical students is on maternity leave and a new group of Malawian medical students were...

Dear friends,

What a difference a week makes!  We have arrived in Malawi and are settling into a nice little furnished house just a five minute walk from the Nkhoma Christian Hospital.  The travel all went well, and we arrived about 42 hours after we left home.  We stopped briefly in Nairobi, Kenya and then in Lusaka, Zambia before landing in Lilongwe, Malawi’s capital city.  World Renew staff hosted us for a day, took us grocery shopping,...

Dear family and friends,

What lovely Spring days we’re having here in The Netherlands!  We had a boat tour of the huge modern harbor of Rotterdam yesterday, and we were happy to have that bottle of sunscreen still in my pocket.  Then a short rain shower in the evening—typical Dutch weather.  It’s so good to catch up with brothers and sisters...

Dear family and friends,

Well this is the tourist view of Malawi.

At the end of the rainy season, everything is very green and lush. We are enjoying many flowers and flowering shrubs and trees. Temperatures are in general very pleasant 60-80F. As we are on the southern hemisphere, the winter is coming, which means that it will get chilly at night, in the 50’s, but in the daytime it will still be about 65-70 . It...

The big Rottweiler bolted out the gate just as I had my back turned.  I was trying to let the car full of church-goers through the gate, and I forgot about our valuable but rambunctious watchdog, and we lost at least 15 minutes tracking him down.  With all the gate-slamming excitement, the latch got bent and would no longer lock, so I just stayed home (with the dog) and the others arrived at church a bit late.

We’re in...
